Having worked as a successful Commercial Artist, Mark Longworth is now pursuing a lifetime passion for sculpture. He has studied portrait sculpture at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London and figurative sculpture with Richard MacDonald in California.
The human machine is overwhelmingly complex and beautiful. The flow of convex and concave curves over mechanisms within the body fires my imagination and is the foundation to my approach and understanding of the human figure.
My aim through sculpture is to capture those fleeting gestures of body language through rotation and gesture. When studying an athlete or dancer pushing their bodies to supreme limits I want to record that majestic moment of tension and grace.
Inspired by classical sculpture, I find it communicates a timeless strength in the pieces of granite, marble, quartzite and clay fashioned into the human form with consummate skill.
Figurative sculpture has the power to move and teach us about ourselves.
